An encounter between Vered (Rose), a female soldier raised by Holocaust survivors from Thessaloniki, and Jonathan, a soldier who tried to commit suicide on the eve of Israel's invasion of Beirut in 1982 during the first Lebanon War, leads both to freedom and salvation
Vered (Rose), a young soldier and aspiring writer from a small town near Tel Aviv, arrives to the rehabilitation ward at the military hospital to nurse injured soldiers. She is assigned to Jonathan, who tried to commit suicie before being shipped to Lebanon. This non-responsive soldier pierces her heart and at his bedside she recounts her unspeakable life story, at the heart of which is her charismatic father, a Thessaloniki native and a Holocaust survivor who loves his youngest daughter a little too much. Nursing this injured soldier, trying to uncover what led to his suicide attempt, and forming a relationship with his family gives Vered strength and leads to her physical and mental salvation.
A cinematic adaptation of Lea Aini's acclaimed novel, awarded the Bialik Prize for Literature in 2010. The novel embodies the voices of the Holocaust survivors and of invisible people within Israeli society, voices that remain relevant today.
